Have you ever turned on the automated caption while watching a video online? How accurately did it generate the caption for you? Using online software to translate words is kind of like that. As useful as they can be at times, they don’t understand the art that puts into choosing just the right combination of characters to write the name just right.
Did you know that there are over 100.000 kanji characters, and among them, only 2,999 of them are allowed to be used for names? That means there are over 97.001 characters that should not be. How do we know which characters are ok to use, and which aren’t?
My name is Erika Hurst. I am the translator of My Japanese Name Plus.
I am a native Japanese speaker who moved to America to learn language and culture over 2 decades ago. Since then, I have became an international translator for corporations. My work includes websites, apps, legal documents, popular movies, and much more.
Because of my background, I know how to write a subtle difference when your name has a unique pronunciation. I know how to put together the right combination of kanji characters that are easy for Japanese audiences to read while maintaining pleasant meaning.
